While reading the "Indigenous Peoples, Ethnic Groups, and the State" by David Maybury-Lewis.

Quote: "The U.S. view is that people are welcome to bring their ethnic attitudes and behaviors to the United States with them, but they are expected to tone them down as they adapt to the common civic culture of the United States. (Maybury-Lewis 102)

I thought this was rather interesting, especially when it came to sever practices of food, clothing, religion, and so on. What do you think? Does this apply honestly, or was it a flippant statement that should be reanalyzed?
